A VOLUNTEER'S STORY

We were retired a few weeks when it became obvious that I needed something worthwhile to do with my time.

I saw an ad on the local access television station about a program to speak for children who had been abused and neglected.  I signed up for the training and after an interview and background check, went to my first training session.

As I was leaving, my husband asked what it was all about, and since I didn't now details, he came along to see.  After thirty hours of training we BOTH became advocates for children in the court system.  That was twelve years ago and we have worked together on cases ever since.  I can honestly say that, aside from raising our own three children, this has been the most rewarding experience of my life.  It is interesting, exciting, sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding. It is especially rewarding to see one or more children in a family end up in a permanent, safe and loving home.  Sometimes that home is the one from which they came, and sometime it is through adoption.

Children are often talked about, around and through when families are in crisis.  We stand for them and make sure their wishes are heard and needs met.  They need us, and it turns out that we need them, as this job fulfills an important personal need.
